PHECC FAR (First Aid Response)

Entry Requirements: No minimum

Maximum Number of Learners per Course: 6 participants

Course Duration: Minimum of 3 Days or 18 hours contact time with an instructor (does not include breaks)

Learning Outcomes:

Recognise and Assess the causes and effects of sudden illness and/or injury in a pre-hospital environment and call for emergency medical services.

React to such pre-hospital emergencies. Respond in a safe, effective and appropriate manner to such emergencies utilising the First Aid Response skill set. Record and Report actions and interventions taken while responding to and managing such incidents and during handover to emergency medical services. Retain a professional and caring attitude in your performance as a First Aid Responder

Assessment:

Assessment using the PHECC’s CFR Community assessment sheet and other FAR sheets.

A 30-minute, 20 short question written exam; the pass mark is 60%.

Learners who may have difficulties completing the MCQ exam due to literacy or language difficulties will be accommodated.  Please inform the instructor either prior to attending the course or soon as possible after starting course so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Certification:

Occupational First Aid Refresher Course – FETAC/QQI 5

Employers: This is a FETAC level 5 course and is open to anyone who currently holds a valid Occupational First Aid Certificate. The Occupational First Aid course now includes Cardiac First Responder training in automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and administering aspirin for heart-attack patients. The Occupational First Aid Regulations Safety, Health and Welfare at Work General Applications Regulations S.I. No. 299 of 2007. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work(General Application) Regulations 2007, there is a requirement on employers based on a risk assessment to have a sufficient number of Occupational First Aiders trained and deployed in the workplace (dependent on the nature of the work) to deal with basic first aid or more serious event-cardiac/stroke. This one-day refresher course covers a comprehensive range of topics to prepare the qualified Occupational First Aider to administer emergency care in the workplace. The course is designed to be interactive allowing Participants to learn a high level of practical skills and have a thorough theoretical knowledge of first aid. This will then enable them to deal competently with any situation that may arise in the working environment.


Who Should Attend: Anyone who wishes to maintain their Occupational First Aid status.
Prerequisites: Valid Occupational First Aid Certificate.
Manual: First Aid, CPR, and AED (Irish Edition).
Duration: 1 day.
Certificate: A4 size certificate issued to each participant.
Certificate Valid For: 2 years.
Accreditation: Recognised Training Health & Safety Authority

English is the language that the training is provided in and participants must have a good understanding of the English language. If it is the case that participants do not have a good command of English, they are permitted to bring an interpreter they may do so but prior notice must be given to Premier Safety. This course is a modular course and each module has a specific timetable. Participants are not encouraged to attend later modules or exam days on alternative course, but we will try to accommodate participants that cannot complete the course due to circumstances beyond their control on an alternative/ later course. Successful candidates can progress to an Occupational First Aid Instructor level 6certificate as this is the minimum standard for entry to this course.

FETAC Certification
Participants will receive ‘Premier Safety’ first aid certificate on completion which will accompany their FETAC/QQI which is valid for a further 2 years.

All assessments are carried out in accordance with FETAC requirements and are both internally and externally authenticated before certification is issued. All participants have the right to appeal their results, the appeals procedure is also in accordance with FETAC regulation. All successful candidates in the written and practical exams will be awarded a FETAC level 5 certificate which is valid for 2 years.

Grading of the exam is as follows
Pass 50% – 64%
Merit 65% – 79%
Distinction 80% – 100%

First Aid Plus

The course content includes:

  • CPR
  • Stroke assessment (FAST Assessment)
  • Altered levels of consciousness.
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Choking
  • Burns
  • Poisons

The course is designed to give participants a broad understanding of first aid. The course is hands on and practical, allowing students to gain skills in CPR/bandaging/surveying patient/burns/poisons.

The course is very popular for parents/grandparents and anyone wishing to gain competent knowledge of first aid.

All participants receive an A4 certificate which is valid for two years.

Who Should Attend: Anyone who wishes to learn first aid.

Duration: Approximately 4.5 hours

Certificate Valid For: 2 years

Accreditation: Premier Safety

Public Course Cost: 100 euro per person
